Literacy rate in India: Kerala tops the list with 96.2 percent, Andhra Pradesh worst performer

The study on “'Household Social Consumption: Education in India as part of 75th round of National Sample Survey - from July 2017 to June 2018'' provides for state-wise detail of literacy rate among persons who are above seven years age.
Kerala has once again emerged as the most literate state in the country with 96.2% literacy rate, while Andhra Pradesh featured at the bottom of the chart with a rate of 66.4%, showed a report based on National Statistical Office (NSO) survey.
The report on ''Household Social Consumption: Education in India as part of 75th round of National Sample Survey - from July 2017 to June 2018'' provides for state-wise detail of literacy rate among the persons who are above seven years age.
According to the survey report, after Kerala, Delhi has the highest literacy rate at 88.7 per cent, followed by Uttarakhand's at 87.6, Himachal Pradesh at 86.6 and Assam's at 85.9 %.
Whereas, Rajasthan is the second-worst performer with literacy rate at 69.7 per cent, followed by Bihar’s 70.9, Telangana at 72.8, Uttar Pradesh at 73 and Madhya Pradesh at 73.7%.
The study showed the overall literacy rate in the country is about 77.7 per cent. In rural areas, the literacy rate is 73.5 percent whereas the literacy rate in urban areas of the country is 87.7.
The report has also stated that at all-India level, the male literacy rate is higher (84.7%) as compared to 70.3 percent among women.
According to the survey, the male literacy rate is higher than the female literacy rate among all states. In Kerala, the male literacy rate is 97.4 percent while among women the literacy rate is  95.2.
A sample of 64,519 rural households from 8,097 villages and 49,238 urban households from 6,188 blocks was collected from all-over India to prepare the survey. The report also informed that nearly 4 percent of rural households and 23 percent of urban households possessed computers.
