Uncle Podger Hangs a Picture

Jerome Klapka Jerome (1859 – 1927) is a comic short story writer. He is mainly appreciated for his comic travelogue like “Three Men in a Boat” and “Three Men in a Bummel”. We enjoy his story very much because it creates humour and laughter.
Unit I
বঙ্গানুবাদ:-
তুমি তোমার সারাজীবনে বাড়িতে ইতস্তত এইরকম হইচই কখনো বোধহয় দেখনি, ঠিক যখন আমার কাকা পোজার একটা কাজ হাতে নিতেন। একটা ছবির ফ্রেম করতে যাকে বলা হয়েছিল তার কাছ থেকে ছবিটা যখন বাড়িতে আসলো তখন সেটাকে খাওয়ার ঘরে দাঁড় করিয়ে ঝুলাবার জন্য অপেক্ষায় রাখা হলো। কাকিমা পজার জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন এটাকে নিয়ে কি করা হবে, তখন কাকা পোজার বললেন,”আরে, ওটা তুমি আমার উপরে ছেড়ে দাও”। “তুমি তোমাদের মধ্যে যে কেউ এ সম্বন্ধে ভেবে নিজেদের বিব্রত করো না। আমি সবকিছুই করে দেব”। আর তখন তিনি তার কোট খুলে ফেলে শুরু করে দিলেন কাজ। তিনি মেয়েটিকে পাঠালেন ছয় পেনি মূল্যের পেরেক আনবার জন্য এবং তারপর তার পেছনে ছেলেদের মধ্যে একজনকে পাঠালেন তাকে পেরেকের মাপ বলবার জন্য।“এখন উইল, তুমি যাও আর আমার হাতুড়িটা নিয়ে এসো”। তিনি চেঁচিয়ে বললেন, “আর টম তুমি আমার রুল টা নিয়ে এসো”। “আমার মই লাগবে, আরো ভালো হয় রান্নাঘরের একটা চেয়ার পাওয়া গেলে”। আর তুমি যেওনা মারিয়া,কারণ আমার তো কাউকে না কাউকে আলো ধরার জন্য দরকার হবে। যখন মেয়েটি ফিরে আসতো, তাকে অবশ্যই আবার যেতে হতো ছবিটা টাঙানোর জন্য কিছুটা দড়ি আনতে।“টম ! টম, কোথায় গেলে টম এদিকে এসো, ছবিটা হাতে তুলে দেওয়ার জন্য তোমাকে লাগবে”।
তারপর তিনি ছবিটা নিয়ে উপরে তুললেন এবং ফেলে দিলেন আর সেটা ফ্রেম থেকে খুলে বেরিয়ে এলো। তিনি কাঁচটা বাঁচাবার চেষ্টা করলেন আর কাঁচে নিজেরই হাত কেটে ফেললেন। তারপর সারা ঘর ভরে লাফাতে লাগলেন আর রুমাল খুঁজে পাওয়ার চেষ্টা করতে লাগলেন। তিনি তার রুমাল খুঁজে পেলেন না কারণ যে কোটটা তিনি খুলে রেখেছিলেন সেই কোটের পকেটে এর মধ্যেই সেই রুমালটা ছিল এবং তিনি জানতেন না কোথায় তিনি কোট টা একটু আগেই রেখে দিয়েছিলেন। বাড়ির সবাই তখন তার যন্ত্রপাতির খোঁজ করে চলতে লাগলো আর তার কোট খোঁজা শুরু হলো। যখন তিনি লাফিয়ে বেড়াতে লাগলেন আর তাদের বাধা দিলেন।“গোটা বাড়ির কেউ কি জানো না আমার কোট টা কোথায় রয়েছে?” আমি সারা জীবন ধরে এরকম কখনো দেখিনি। “তোমরা ছয়জন ! আর পাঁচ মিনিট পেরোয়নি, একটি কোট রাখলাম আর তোমরা কিনা সেটা খুঁজে বার করতে পারছ না”। “বেশ সবাইকে আর---"
তারপর তিনি উঠে পড়লেন এবং দেখলেন যে তিনি সেটার ওপর বসে ছিলেন এবং হে কে ডেকে বললেন: “ওহ, তোমরা একটা ছেড়ে দাও! আমি নিজেই এখন এটা খুঁজে পেয়েছি!” যখন আধঘন্টা চলে গেল খালি তার আঙ্গুল নিয়ে, তখন তার মধ্যে একটি নতুন কাঁচ জুটে গেল আবার তিনি লেগে পড়লেন। দুজন লোক চেয়ারটা ধরার জন্য থাকলো আর তৃতীয় আরেকজন তাকে এটাতে উঠতে সাহায্য করল এবং সেখানে তাকে ধরে রাখল। চতুর্থ জন তাকে একটি পেরেকও এগিয়ে দিলো এবং পঞ্চম জন একটি হাতুড়ি বাড়িয়ে দিল এবং তিনি পেরেক টা হাতে নিলেন এবং ফেলে দিলেন।“ওইখানে!”-আহত সুরে তিনি বললেন,” এখন পেরেকটা ও গেছে”। অবশেষে পেরেকটা পাওয়া গেল কিন্তু তার মধ্যে তিনি হাতুড়িটা হারিয়ে ফেললেন।“হাতুড়িটা গেল কোথায়? আমি হাতুড়ি দিয়ে কি করলাম? হায় ভগবান! তোমরা সাত সাত জন হা করে ওখানে তাকিয়ে রয়েছে, আর তোমরা জানো না আমি হাতুড়ি নিয়ে কি করলাম!”

Activity 4
Answer the following question.
a)The names of the children of Uncle Podger are Will ,Tom and Maria .
b) Uncle Podger asked Will for a hammer and told Tom to bring the rule. He also wanted the step-ladder and a kitchen-chair from Tom. He needed Maria to hold the light. He would send the girl out for sixpen’orth of nails and then one of the boys after her to tell her what size to get.
c) When Uncle Podger would lift up the picture, he had dropped it and the picture would come out of the frame. Then he would try to save the glass and cut his finger.
d) Uncle Podger wanted his coat because he could not find his handkerchief. It was in the pocket of the coat. He would use the handkerchief in tying up the bleeding finger.
e) Uncle Podger found his coat in such a place where he had been sitting on for a long time and that was the chair he sat on.

বঙ্গানুবাদ:-
আমরা তার জন্য হাতুড়ি খুঁজে এনে দিলাম আর তারপর দেয়ালে তৈরি করা চিহ্নিত জায়গাটা তার নজর এড়িয়ে গেল যেখানে পেরেকটা ঢোকানোর ব্যবস্থা করা হয়েছিল। আমরা একে একে তার পাশে চেয়ারে উঠে দাঁড়ালাম এবং দেখলাম যদি আমরা এটা খুঁজে বার করতে পারি। আমরা প্রত্যেকে আলাদা আলাদা জায়গায় এটার খোঁজ করলাম আর তিনি আমাদের সকলকেই বোকা বলেই ডাকলেন। তিন ইঞ্চি দূরে জায়গায় পৌঁছতে তার পক্ষে যতটা যাওয়া সম্ভব ছিল ততটাই যাওয়ার চেষ্টা করলেন এবং দড়িটা তার হাত ফসকে পড়ে গেল এবং তিনি নিচে থাকা পিয়ানোর উপর হড়কে গিয়ে পড়লেন। অবশেষে কাকা পোজার জায়গাটা ঠিক করে ফেললেন আর পেরেকের ছুঁচালো দিকটা বাম হাতে ধরে ওই জায়গায় রাখলেন আর ডান হাতে হাতুড়ি তুলে নিলেন। এবং প্রথম আঘাতেই তিনি তার বুড়ো আঙ্গুল থেঁতলে ফেললেন আর যন্ত্রণায় আর্তনাদ করে তিনি কোনো একজনের পায়ের পাতার ওপর হাতুড়িটা ফেলে দিলেন। মারিয়া কাকিমা শান্তভাবে মন্তব্য করলেন যে পরের বার যখন কাকা পোজার চার দেয়ালে হাতুড়ি মেরে পেরেক পুঁততে যাবেন তিনি আশা প্রকাশ করলেন যে তাকে যেন ঠিক সময় জানিয়ে দেওয়া হয়। তারপর কাকিমা যাওয়ার বন্দোবস্ত করবেন তার মায়ের সঙ্গে এক সপ্তাহ ছুটি কাটিয়ে আসার জন্য, আর তার মাঝে এই কাজ চলতে লাগলো।“ওহ ! , তোমরা মহিলারা তোমরা সব কিছু নিয়ে এইরকম একটা অনর্থক হইচই করে বেড়াও”। কাকা পোজার নিজেকে সমালোচনা সুরে জবাব দিলেন।“কেন, আমার বেশ লাগে এই ধরনের একটা ছোট কাজ করতে।“এবং তারপর তিনি অপর একটা চেষ্টা করলেন। দ্বিতীয়বার ঘা দিতেই পেরেকটা প্লাস্টারের মধ্য দিয়ে পরিষ্কার চলে গেল এবং তারপর হাতুড়ির অর্ধেকটা ঢুকে গেল। তারপর আবার আমরা রুলার আর দড়ি খুঁজে বার করলাম এবং একটা নতুন গর্ত তৈরি করা হলো। মধ্যরাত নাগাদ খুবই টেরা বাঁকা আর অরক্ষিত অবস্থায় ছবিটা উপরে উঠলো।“ওখানেই তুমি রয়ে যাও”, তিনি এই কথা বলে চেয়ার থেকে জোরে নামতে গিয়ে সবসুদ্ধ নিয়ে পড়লেন কয়লা দানাশস্য রাখার জায়গায় এবং তার টাঙ্গানো ছবিটার টেরাবাঁকা অবস্থাটা ভালো করে দেখে স্পষ্টতই তার গর্ব হল।“কেন কিছু মানুষের এইরকম ছোট একটা কাজ করবার জন্য একটা লোকের দরকার যে হয় !”

5. Always use own ideas according to passage.
Now write the summary of the given passage.
He asked if anyone knew about the coat he had left five minutes ago. He blamed everyone in the family except himself. But he found that he had been sitting on it. As soon as he got it, he called out everyone to tell about it.
