******* 1.নদ-নদী, সাগর, মহাসাগর, দ্বীপপুঞ্জ, বিখ্যাতখাল, সংবাদপত্র, ধর্মগ্রন্থ, জাহাজের নাম, বিখ্যাত অট্টালিকা, বিখ্যাত ঘটনা, বিমান, ট্রেন, অনেকগুলো পর্বত নিয়ে গঠিত পর্বতমালা, অনেকগুলো দেশ নিয়ে গঠিত দেশ, মরুভূমি প্রভৃতির নামের পূর্বে ‘The’ বসে। *********

যেমন-

Rivers: The Ganga, The Padma, The Damodar.

Seas: The Bay of Bengal, The Arabian Sea, The Red Sea.

Oceans: The Atlantic Ocean, The Indian Ocean.

Islands: The Andamans, The West Indies.

Canals: The Suez Canal, The English Channel.

Newspapers: The Telegraph, TheAajkal, The Statesman.

Holy Books: The Geeta, the bible, The Koran.

Ships: The Titanic, The Seagull, The Seamaster.

Monuments: The Taj-Mahal, The Writer’s Buildings, TheRedFort.

Events: The First World War, The World Cup.

Trains: The Dakota, The Rajdhani Express, The Geetanjali Express.

Mountains: The Himalayas, The Alps, The Karakoram.

United Places: The Punjab, The U.K., The USA.,   The U.S.S.R

Deserts: The Sahara, TheGobi, The Thar.

কিন্তু একটা পর্বত/দেশ/ দ্বীপ হলে ‘The’ বসে না-

Mountains: Kanchanjangha, Everest.

Islands: Java, Sri Lanka.

Countries: India, Nepal.

Places: Kolkata, Mumbai.

Continents: Asia, Africa.

2.কোন Noun – কে নিদিষ্ট করে বোঝাতে , ওই noun পূর্বে।

যেমন- I like the game. / আমি খেলাটি পছন্দ করি। (এখানে কোন নিদিষ্ট খেলার কথাই বলা হচ্ছে)

The boys are running. – ছেলেগুলো দৌড়াচ্ছে । (এখানে নিদিষ্ট ছেলেগুলির কথাই বলা হয়েছে, অন্য কোনো ছেলেরা না)

3. কোন জাতি বোঝাতে common noun – এর পূর্বে ‘The’ বসে।

• The camel can walk in the desert – উট মরূভূমিতে হাঁটতে পারে।
• The dog can smell well – কুকুর ভালো শুঁকতে পারে।
• The cow is a useful animal –গরু একটি উপকারী প্রাণী ।

(এখানে সমগ্র উট, কুকুর এবং গরুর জাতির কথা বলা হয়েছে, কোন একটি উট, কুকুর বা গরুর কথা বলা হয় নি।)

4. সুপারলেটিভ ডিগ্রির পূর্বে সবসময় ‘The’ বসে।

The boy is the best in the class – ছেলেটি ক্লাসের সব থেকে ভাল ছেলে।

The boy is one of the best boys in the class - ছেলেটি ক্লাসের অনেক ভালো ছেলেদের মধ্যে অন্যতম।

5.দিকের [direction] নামের পূর্বে ‘The’ বসে।

যেমন: The east (পূর্বদিক), the west (পশ্চিমদিক)

6. পেশা বোঝাতে কোন Noun এর আগে ‘The’ বসে।

I joined the Bar.

7.  ‘The’ is used as adverbs with comparatives.

যেমন – The sooner, the better.

8. বিভিন্ন জাতি (Nationals = all people of a place/country) –

•      I.        The English are brave.   [All people of England]
•    II.        The Bengalees are intelligent. [All people of Bengal]
•  III.        The Japanese are diligent. [All people of Japan]
•  IV.        The Chinese are short. [All people of China]
•    V.        The Indians.
•  VI.        The Americans.
