His First Flight
The Text
The young seagull was alone on his ledge.
ছোট্ট সিগাল তাঁর উঁচু পাহাড়ের পাথরের খাঁজে একাকী ছিল।
His two brothers and his sister had already flown away the day before.
তার দুই ভাই এবং তার বোন এর আগের দিনই উড়ে গিয়েছিল।
He had been afraid to fly with them.
সে তাদের সাথে উড়তে ভয় পেয়েছিল।
When he had run forward to the brink of the ledge he became afraid.
সে যখনই উন্নত শৈলস্তবক এর কিনারায় দৌড়ে এগিয়ে যাচ্ছিল তখনই সে ভয় পেয়ে যাচ্ছিল।
The great expanse of the sea stretched down beneath, and it was miles down.
সমুদ্রের বিশাল প্রশস্ততা নীচে প্রসারিত ছিল এবং এটি কয়েক মাইল নিচে ছিল।
He felt certain that his wings would never support him.
সে নিশ্চিত অনুভব করেছিল যে তার ডানাগুলি কখনই তাকে সমর্থন করবে না।
So he bent his head and ran away back to the hole where he slept at night.

His father and mother had come around calling to him shrilly.

That was twenty-four hours ago.

Since then nobody had come near him.
তখন থেকে কেউ তাঁর কাছে আসেনি।
The day before, he had watched his parents flying about with his brothers and sister.
আগের দিন, সে তার বাবা-মাকে উড়ে ঘুরে বেড়াতে দেখেছিল তার ভাইদের এবং বোনকে নিয়ে।
They were teaching them the art of flight and how to dive for fish.
তারা তাদের উড়ানের শিল্প এবং কীভাবে মাছের জন্য ডুব দেবে তা শিক্ষা দিচ্ছিল।
He had seen his elder brother catch his first herring, while his parents circled around proudly.

The sun was now ascending the sky, blazing warmly on his ledge that faced the south.

সে না উড়ে বাবা-মার কাছে পৌঁছানোর কোনও উপায় খুঁজতে চেষ্টা করছিল।
But on each side of him the ledge ended in a sheer fall, with the sea beneath.
কিন্তু তার দুই পাশেই খাঁজটি খাড়া ভাবে নীচে সমুদ্র পর্যন্ত শেষ হয়েছিল।
He could surely reach them without flying if he could only move northwards along the cliff.
সে না উড়েই তাদের কাছে পৌঁছাতে পারত যদি সে কেবল উত্তর দিকে খাড়া উঁচু পাহাড় বরবার সরে যেতে পারে।
But then on what could he walk?

There was no ledge, and he was not a fly.
সেখানে কোন খাঁজ ছিল না, এবং সে উড়ে যেতে পারত না।
He stepped slowly out to the brink of the ledge.

He stood on one leg with the other leg hidden under his wing.

Closing one eye and then the other, he pretended to be falling asleep.

Still his parents took no notice of him.

She was standing on a little high hump on the plateau, eating a piece of fish.
সে মালভূমির উপর কিছুটা উঁচু কুঁজে দাঁড়িয়ে ছিল, এক টুকরো মাছ খাচ্ছিল।
The sight of the food maddened him.
খাবারের দৃশ্য তাকে পাগল করে তুলেছিল।
"Ge, ga, ga,” he cried, begging her to bring him some food.
"জি, গা, গা," সে কাঁদতে লাগল, তাকে প্রার্থনা করল কিছু খাবার আনতে।
“Gaw-ool-ah," she screamed back.
"গাউ-ওওল-আহ," সে প্রতুত্তরে চিৎকার করে উঠল।
He kept calling, and after a minute or so, he uttered a joyful scream.
সে ডাকতে থাকল, এবং এক মিনিট বা তার পরে সে একটি আনন্দপূর্ণ চিৎকার করল।
His mother had picked up a piece of fish and was flying across to him with it.
তাঁর মা এক টুকরো মাছ তুলেছিল এবং তা নিয়ে তাঁর কাছে উড়ে যাচ্ছিল।
But when she was just opposite to him, she halted, her wings motionless.

The piece of fish in her beak was almost within reach of his beak.

He waited a moment in surprise, wondering why she did not come nearer.
সে অবাক হয়ে এক মুহুর্ত অপেক্ষা করল, বিস্মিত হয়ে ভাবছিল কেন সে((মা) আরও কাছে আসল না।
And then, maddened by hunger, he dived at the fish.
এবং তারপরে, ক্ষুধায় পাগল হয়ে সে মাছের দিকে ঝাঁপ দিল।
With a loud scream he fell outwards and downwards into space.
জোরে চিত্কার করে সে বাইরের দিকে এবং নিচের দিকে ফাঁকা জায়গায় পড়ে গেল।
Then terror seized him and his heart stood still.

But it only lasted a moment.

The next moment he felt his wings spread outwards.

The wind rushed against his breast feathers, then under the stomach and against his wings.

He could feel the tips of his wings cutting through the air.

Then his father flew over him, screaming.

He saw a vast green sea beneath him, and he turned his beak sideways and crowed amusedly.
সে তার নীচে বিস্তীর্ণ সবুজ সমুদ্র দেখল, এবং সে তার ঠোঁটটিকে পাশের দিকে ঘুরিয়ে নিল এবং খুশিতে ডেকে উঠল।
His parents and his brothers and sister had landed on this green floor in front of him.

They were beckoning to him, calling shrilly.

He dropped his legs to stand on the green sea.

His feet sank into the sea, and then his belly touched it and he sank no further.

He was floating on it.
